Specific Tips

  • Bigger eyes - Lighter shades give the eyes a larger look and when combined with a darker shade in the outer corners of the eyelid increase the larger look
  • Drooping lids - Silver eyeshadow is the perfect fix for reviving droopy eyelids giving you a better canvas for eyeshadow application
  • Setting your eyeshadow - You can use a loose transparent face powder to set your eyeshadow to keep it from creasing
  • Shimmer shades - Shimmery eyeshadow is nice for special occasions or evenings out but can also show off wrinkle on the lid - If you must have some shimmer use it to highlight in the brow bone area and/or just under the lower lashes

Instructional

Shading techniques - The two techniques used for shading the eyes are winged and round shading.  Winged shading is used primarily for younger women where the corners of the eyes haven't begun to sag.  Round shading works for anyone with sagging eye corners or a rounded brow area

Rounded application - The highlighter shadow should be applied from the lash line to just a little beyond the crease then up to the eyebrow; Medium shade is applied on the eyelid and smudged under the lower eyelashes; Accent shade is applied in the outer corner "wedge" of the eye; Blend and blend some more; Use eyeliner pencil to line the upper and lower eyelashes

As a side note it is worth checking out wikipedia for more information on eyeshadow types and applications

Winged application - The highlighter shade will run from lash line to brow bone; Medium shade will cover lid; Accent shade in "wedge" of eyes' outer corners; More blending; Eyeliner pencil to line upper and lower eyelashes.

These are some good basic rules of thumb when it comes to learning how to apply eyeshadow.

I'm working on developing a new style and this page gave me a lot of ideas. I tend to skip shadow but maybe I'm missing out on something great that's really not so difficult after all.

There is a lot of great information here. I would love to see some pictures and examples to get a better idea of how the techniques are done but I like that you don't litter your page with unnecessary videos.

Thanks for the tips. I've always used either light or dark shadow on my eyes. I never thought of pairing them to make my eyes look bigger but it really works.

This morning I tried using silver eyeshadow instead of my usual black eyeliner and I was surprised at the difference. It really got rid of the sleepy eyed look I always have and my friends loved it.

Not only does foundation even out the tone of your eyelids, I've found it also helps keep the shadow from creasing. I agree that it's better to spend a little more on your makeup brushes. The results are worth it.
